How to start your car if your key fob battery is dead

It's hard to know when your key fob battery is low. Occasionally, folks find themselves locked out of their cars and seemingly stranded over a dead fob. If this ever happens to you, here's what to do.

Use the backup key to unlock the left front door

Inside most fobs is a flat metal "slot" key. Its only function is to unlock the driver's door in case of a dead key fob battery. Split open the housing, and you'll find the slot key tucked inside.

It helps to practice taking your slot key out of the fob ahead of any situation.

Hold the key fob up to the start button, or use the fob itself to press the start button

A dead fob battery will still emit a close-range signal. Hold the fob right up against the start button. You can also try using the fob to push the button.

Check for a slot

Some vehicles have a slot somewhere on the steering column that "accepts" the fob and connects its signal to the car.

Understand your car's key fob before a lockout
